PRODUCT DATA of 19: Wires and cables
Material19: Wires and cables
General InformationThe requirements of an electrical wires and cables for use in space are in many ways unique, and substantially more demanding than those for use on the ground. The fabrication and ground-testing of a spacecraft system demand physical and electrical excellence. Furthermore, when the materials are to be used in outer space, the design engineer must consider their weight, resistance to radiation, and performance in an ultra-high vacuum.
Use in SpacecraftThe most important properties of wires and cables for use in spacecraft are:
  • Outgassing characteristics
  • Radiation resistance
  • Weight
  • Resistance to cold flow
  • Cut-Through resistance
  • Solderability
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Ageing
  • Resistance To Fluids
  • Notch resistance
  • Adhesion to potting compounds
  • maximum voltage
  • Temperature characteristics
  • Red Plague Susceptibility (ANTHONY and BROWN test on Silver-plated wires)
This test shall be performed in accordance with ECSS-Q-ST-70-20c
Failure of this test entails failure of the complete qualification or lot acceptance.
Main CategoriesWires and cables shall be procured according to the requirements in ESCC generic specifications 3901 and 3902.
